Restorative Practices at Kolbe

At Kolbe, we believe that strong relationships, high expectations and meaningful support are essential for student growth. Our approach to behaviour is grounded in restorative practices, which focus on learning, accountability and repairing relationships rather than punishment alone.

When students make mistakes, we work with them to understand what happened, reflect on the impact of their actions and identify better choices for the future. Restorative conversations are a key part of this approach. Through calm, respectful dialogue, students are encouraged to develop self‑awareness, empathy and responsibility for their behaviour.

Staff use affective restorative questions such as:

  • What happened and what were you thinking at the time?
  • Who has been affected by your actions and how?
  • What do you need to do to make things right?
  • How can we work together to make sure this doesn’t happen again?

This process helps students at Kolbe recognize the impact of their choices, rebuild trust and re‑engage positively with learning. By combining high accountability with high support, restorative practices help create a safe, fair and kind school environment where every student is supported to grow into the best version of themselves.
